Canada’s newest territory has many voices yet to be heard. In this program two films capture the essence of the new territory through a fictional drama based on a traditional legend and a study of modern day political life in Nunavut.

Ninguira is an experimental fictional story based on authentic oral histories, traditional knowledge and contemporary reality of Igloolik today. An elder and her granddaughter get to know and appreciate each other after a family tragedy. A new half-hour docudrama by Arnait Video Productions featuring respected Igloolik Elder Rachel Uyurasuk.

Rapid change from traditional to modern life in Nunavut, like many post-colonial societies, has concentrated power, wealth and information in a few hands. Far-reaching decisions are being made daily by a mostly-unelected political elite with minimal input from under-informed citizens scattered over enormous distances. With no elected legislature in place until April 1999, Inuit organizations and their government advisors made these decisions based on trust.
