The Territ-Aur(i)al Imprints collaborative exchange soundtrack and soundscape is the sonic result of five Indigenous media artists coming together from North America and Latin America. During a three week residency (May/June 2017) at the Shain Wüunu Experimental Arts Centre, an artist-run, not-for-profit organization located in Palomino/Arawak territory in La Guajira, Colombia. Host Alejandro Valbuena guided the artists into extraordinary land sites where a new catalogue of sounds was collected. Unusual and exciting sounds that didn’t register from memory such as oceans that hissed, beaches that popped, insects and birds that sang unrecognizable songs became the basis for this collaborative sound work.
The team stitched together common language sounds of children’s laughter and spirited thunderstorms as well as environmentally inspired poems to make North of South/Norte del sur, the soundscape and soundtrack to the film of the same name which is screening at imagineNATIVE on October 20, 2017.
Territ-Aur(i)al Imprints Artists are Francisco Huichaqueo, María Dolores Arias Martînez, Casey Koyczan, Janet Rogers, and Alejandro Valbuena.
We invite you to take the time to visit the Audio Art Gallery and immerse yourself in the sonic artworks of Indigenous artists.
North of South / Norte del Sur, a video created by the artists, is also presented at this year’s Festival.
The Territ-Aur(i)al Imprints project was funded with support by the Canada Council for the Arts.
