This is the story of Palm Island, a tropical paradise with a dark history. One morning, local resident Cameron Doomadgee swore at a policeman and forty-five minutes later lay dead in a prison cell. The officer on the scene denied assaulting him, claiming he fell to his death. The trial that ensued ignited anger and racial tensions across Australia, resulting in mass riots that tore through the community. The Tall Man is a luminous tale of two worlds colliding, and a haunting moral puzzle that brings into question the meaning of justice for Indigenous people.
Producer Darren Dale (Bunjalung) is the co-director of Blackfella Films, one of Australia’s premiere Indigenous production companies. He produced short films Mimi for director Warwick Thornton and Flat for Beck Cole, and he has co-curated the Sydney-based Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival since 2002.
