imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous
Story Editing Mentorship

Deadline: December 1, 2017

This initiative aims to increase Indigenous expertise in feature film script development from all creative contributing points, by providing one selected applicant a nine-month mentorship (January to September 2018) with established HGF Script Readers and shadow the Indigenous Story Editors of the imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Screenwriting Intensive.

Starting in January 2018, the selected mentee will meet with HGF staff in a series of meetings to learn the behind-the-scenes processes of story development at the national funding organization that supports the development of Canadian dramatic feature films.

The mentee will shadow HGF Programs Manager Alan Bacchus during the script development process of the Fund. The participant will be exposed to the lifecycle of many projects as they move through the HGF system from application to adjudication to the final decision-making process and beyond. The participant will have a chance to read submissions and observe the creative decision making process. He/she will be tasked with writing coverage reports on selected scripts to help develop their creative analytical skills. In addition, the participant will sit in on story calls with selected projects in development and observe the process of giving notes and project-tracking.  The mentee is encouraged to work on writing their own projects during this time and receive feedback from HGF personnel.

The mentee will also be invited to shadow Indigenous Story Editors leading the imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Screenwriting Intensive, a nine-month program where submitted dramatic film scripts are given an intensive with a select group of Indigenous participant artists from treatment to polishing and presentation at imagineNATIVE 2018.

A confidentiality contract will be signed between HGF and the mentee.

This is a voluntary learning opportunity for any Indigenous Canadian writer or artist looking to engage with experts in the art, practice and business of story editing.
